First Light
The Native Americans are a deeply spiritual people. They knew that the
world is here for us to experience, and Oh!…what a world it is! Think about
that time of day just before the sun comes up, when the air is still crisp
and smells cool and refreshing. As they sit in a canoe, gently paddling,
listening to the waves lap against the hull and swish with each lazy stroke
of the paddle, the water dripping each time it’s lifted from the water. If
they are gentle enough, they can hear a fish break the surface, deer
browsing among the trees, and the morning chorus that the birds sing for all
who will listen. And then, ever so gently, the light comes….and the vision
will take your breath away! |

Simple Pleasures
The forest calls. For the woodsman it is here where his spirit is most
content. Though frightening to those who made their homes in the
settlements, here he was most at home. Here he found shelter, food and
freedom. Its beauty, such as the way light came through the leaves, or the
antics of a squirrel, or the exuberance of a singing bird, could be a source
of endless joy. Here he could experience the wonder found in simple
pleasures. |

Golden Sunset
Two hundred years ago, Lewis and Clark journeyed up the Missouri River in
what was to become an historic expedition. Along the way, there were moments
of adventure, of exertion and fatigue, of anxiety and of great discovery.
There were also moments of quiet serenity and amazing beauty that were
indelibly imprinted in the memory of its members. Who could forget those
majestic mountains, those extraordinary people, or that incredible golden
sunset?

Dawn's Gift
Mornings are a beautiful time of day. Birds are singing, the air is vibrant, and the sky dances with color. Paddling a canoe gently as the mist rises off the water brings a feeling of peacefulness before the day's activities begin. It is a time of thoughtfulness and quiet serenity as the world awakens. It is dawn's gift.

Forgotten Voices
With the arrival
of the Europeans began a period of great cultural change for the Native
Americans. Some of these changes, such as the introduction of cloth, metal
and other trade goods, were eagerly embraced, while other changes were met
with resistance and regret. But one thing was for sure, the native
cultures would never again be the same.
Here we see two people on a short
journey not too far from their village. Both show a strong influence of
European contact; linen and wool clothing, glass trade beads, metal
knives, trade silver jewelry, powder horn and musket. Yet amidst the swirl
of these turbulent times, their heritage still flows through their veins.
On the bluffs behind them is a
reminder of the old ways: meaningful symbols written in iron oxide by
their ancestors. A legacy of history and old teaching left behind by
forgotten voices.

Fort Osage
When I was a boy. I used to love making play forts. Even now, decades
later, an old fort still stirs the imagination and brings a feeling of
adventure. Climb the blockhouse and overlook the Missouri River. Watch the
blacksmith working in his shop. See the soldier’s barracks and the factory
house and learn how people lived and worked together on the frontier.
Imagine.
